Fokhrul Islam is the Chief Executive Officer of Global Procurement Group and Northern Gas and Power. He is a leader who delivers outstanding results and inspires his team to achieve the very highest in standards.

Fu (to friends and colleagues) has shown exceptional drive and determination to get Global Procurement Group to where it is today – a major global energy specialist, approaching 800 heads across three continents.

Fu possessed a deep sense of self-belief in his ability to develop a successful sales business to support himself and his family. Inspired by Tony Kern’s thesis on professionalism and human performance in the sales industry: ‘Going Pro’, he spent roughly ten years learning as much as he possibly could about sales and business, spending time in telecoms sales with BT Corporate and business energy procurement with the former Utilitywise.

Fu encapsulates the very essence of the entrepreneurial spirit. Through a combination of dedicated focus and creativity, he taught himself many of the processes involved in building a successful business, starting that process from his bedroom in South Shields, near Newcastle upon Tyne, in 2012.

He built up a customer base which he managed through devising his own in-house internal CRM system. These foundations for growth gave the business a very effective model of scalability, which he successfully took to France and the USA. His ability to understand the impact of technology in the energy industry led him to develop a team of engineers, technicians and software specialists in Malta and India, which evolved into the 100-strong energy hub that is ClearVUE Systems today.

The results of his hard work and passion speak for themselves. Over the last four years to 2019/20, Global Procurement Group has quadrupled turnover to more than £67m and recorded 116.63% profit increase over the last three years.

In 2019, Fu was named the North’s Rising Star in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. And in 2020, he scooped the major accolade – Britain’s Most Ambitious Business Leader, as compiled by The Telegraph newspaper and Lloyd’s LDC. He has a 99% approval rating from former employees on highly-respected Glassdoor.

Leah Barrett

Global Operations Director

Leah Barrett is Global Operations Director at Global Procurement Group. She combines entrepreneurial flair, business acumen and a dynamic approach to all elements of the Global Procurement Group and Northern Gas and Power’s Services department. With particular expertise in building leadership presence, and a wealth of operational experience in the energy industry, Leah delivers exceptionally rigorous compliance standards across the business portfolio. Through coaching, training and its strategic implementation, she impacts at a senior level influencing the whole business.

Leah provides expert guidance for the Service and Operations team – the largest standalone team in the Northern Gas and Power network. Her department were highly commended nationally at the Energy Efficiency Awards 2018 for Quality Management, Compliance and Training. Leah’s dedication, industry knowledge and determination to succeed has enabled her to develop her sales career successfully. At just 27 years old, she was made Global Operations Director at Global Procurement Group, having started as a Team Manager just a few years prior. Leah was nominated for Inspiring Female Leader in the North East Chamber’s Business Awards 2020 and won the Utilities Female Leader of the Year 2021 in the CEOToday awards.

Mark Leeming

Global Sales Director

Mark Leeming is the company’s Global Sales Director and has been with the business for three and a half years. He is integral to the efficient communication across GPG’s whole sales environment, streamlining performance and ensuring the business maintains its competitive advantage. Mark has worked in sales for roughly 20 years and been in senior management roles since 2002. In 2009 he took an underperforming regional Orange franchise to the top five in the country. At former Utilitywise he achieved £9.2m revenue in 12 months, progressing to a senior Operations position, before joining GPG in February 2017. For GPG last year he exceeded his £19m sales target, by £5.5m.
He drives high-performing sales teams, supporting the successful growth of their customer base. He is a highly respected and personable professional, dedicated and driven, with an excellent relationship-building mentality, whether with colleagues, suppliers or wider industry influencers.

Andrew Laird

UK Sales Director

Andrew Laird is Northern Gas and Power’s UK Sales Director, with over 10 years experience in the energy sector, he brings a wealth of knowledge of the global business utilities market to NGP.

Providing strategic direction on business vision and planning. He works with both the senior directors of the business and the Board to deliver input on the technology roadmap that the business is taking to drive key future growth.

He has operated at a high level in the energy industry for the past decade having worked for PLCs and helped grow start-ups into multi-million business operations. Building his knowledge in this time he has developed a strong network of relationships with stakeholders, customers and suppliers internationally and ensures the extremely high quality standards of service levels are maintained throughout all of NGP’s international operations.

Martin Nicholson

Global Head of Business Development

Martin Nicholson is the group’s Global Head of Business Development and also operates as the group’s Chief Technical Officer. Martin is a consummate leader, working to identify new opportunities and markets for new technological developments and innovations.

Martin provides an outstanding strategic overview of all elements of the business, and has a vast knowledge of the energy industry. He builds strong partner relationships and is hugely knowledgeable and versatile – with the agility to move from web development to SEO. Martin works across new technological concepts and new market channels, right through to data storage and security.

He has been instrumental to the successful development and launch of the company’s new price comparison engine – BusinessEnergyQuotes.com, as well as the company’s ClearVUE Energy Management systems. His unbounded enthusiasm and experience brings an extra dimension to all he does within the business.

Paul Barrett

Director of Customer Service

Paul Barrett is the Director of Customer Service at Northern Gas and Power. With a career spanning 23 years, Paul has operated at a strategic level performing senior management roles across the public, private and third sectors. Paul possesses a track record of exceptional achievement in performance management and customer service, having operated across the globe to deliver the highest level of customer service within the police service, locally based charities and within international corporations. He recently joined Northern Gas and Power and quickly developed a Customer Service Department, which blends market leading energy management solutions with an exceptional and experienced team.

Terri Lewis

Global Talent Acquisition Director

Terri is highly experienced in all areas of talent acquisition. She will be responsible for ensuring the business adopts evolving and cutting-edge, new talent strategies, embracing the ever-changing development of emerging technologies and analytics and ensuring that the process is streamlined and scales on a global level, but maintains a strong personal, human candidate experience.

Prior to joining Global Procurement Group, Terri supported Newcastle Building Society as a consultant within the Recruitment division and prior to that, she managed the national recruitment programme with EE (including when it was acquired by BT) accumulating 13 years’ service in the process.

Terri said “It’s exciting to have joined the business at the start of its transformational journey. I love a challenge and it’s great that I will get to have a direct impact on the organisation during this period of change.

Megan Hofmann

Global Organisational Development Director

Megan Hofmann started her career with Orange in the Learning and Development function. She then spent 14 years at Barclays PLC, achieving several promotions to the role of Global Leadership Trainer, with her key focus being to support people learn, develop and reach their full potential. Both within her working capacity but also outside work, Megan has a passion to support young people develop, having worked with several local authorities to reach young offenders and teenagers.  She is also a qualified Neurolinguistic Programming practitioner.

She said: “I have a passion for helping people reach their potential both professionally and personally.

“I’m excited to join the business at a point in its journey where I can have a substantial impact on the Learning and Development function.”

Geoff Moses, Global Operations Executive, is a results oriented professional business leader with a strong background in selling into emerging markets. With over 19 years of experience gained in sales he has 15 years in senior management roles with a proven track record in: Strategic management and development of significant multi-million-pound business in several diverse market sectors including energy trading, energy procurement, renewable energy technologies, SMART and real-time energy monitoring systems, cloud based technologies and energy bureau solutions. He is involved in the development and implementation of complex, sales management operational processes with key focus on drivers for success and performance measurement.

Latif Faiyaz

Head of Flexible Purchasing

Latif is our Head of Flexible Purchasing & Energy Strategy. Latif has a wealth of experience from within the energy industry, with experience in developing carbon projects and trading carbon internationally at Alfa Energy. Latif has also worked at Engie and Orsted, implementing the integration of energy service offerings into supply contracts. His experience is varied too. He’s worked ‘on the other side of the fence’ as an Energy Manager for the NHS, before returning back to energy trading for LG Energy and Yorkshire Energy.

With Northern Gas and Power, Latif heads our Flexible Purchasing department of Energy Traders, Analysts and Bid Managers, converting some of our 31 TWhs of energy under management into flexible contracts.

Director of Energy Services

Dan Smith, Director of Energy Services, is responsible for a wide-ranging energy management portfolio helping Northern Gas and Power’s customers improve their energy efficiency and reduce their bills.

He is a successful Head of Energy and Chartered Energy Engineer with a depth of experience working for and with a variety of clients, including major blue-chip corporations such as IKEA, Rolls Royce Aerospace and Siemens. He has operated internationally (Europe, Africa and Asia) in FMCG and manufacturing sectors, and has a proven track record of delivering and managing projects, developing and delivering operational strategies, and managing energy and influencing large corporates with respect to energy and sustainability. He is responsible for annual energy budgets up to £20 million, and single-value projects up to £3 million.

His depth of experience brings to Northern Gas and Power an extensive specialist knowledge gained from nearly 30 years in energy engineering, energy services and energy management, in many different sectors all over the world, from China to Zambia.

Fareed Ahmed

Lead Software Engineer

Fareed Ahmed is the group’s Lead Software Engineer, delivering on proprietary software such as ClearVUE. Lite, ClearVUE. PRO and various other projects to support the core business through the use of technology. Having studied at University College London for a M.Eng in Mathematics and Computer Science, Fareed is an expert in IoT enabled software systems and cloud technologies.

Having been with the company for over three years, and at just 23 years old, Fareed brings agility, dynamism and expertise to his role.

Asif Ahmed

Global Executive

Asif Ahmed is one of the longest serving people at Northern Gas and Power. During his varied career he has worked his way through diligent hard work to now oversee all the daily tasks required to help run the Global Operations in every department across the entire group. Working closely with all Directors and the Management Team, his 15+ years of sales and customer care experience has been used to recruit, secure supplier relationships and embed stringent policies to fulfil the objective of the growth of the operation, to one now spanning three continents.

Scott High, People Director (UK), is responsible for the colleague life-cycle, including Employer Brand, Recruitment, HR, Learning & Development, Employee Engagement, Internal Communications and Health & Safety. He is an integral part of the senior director level team inputting daily in the direction of the business.

He has years of experience in the  people engagement and talent acquisition space and is an accomplished leader who has a collaborative work ethic driving his teams forward to achieve excellence at all levels.

Kelly Convery

Global HR Manager

Kelly Convery, as Global HR Manager, Kelly is responsible for people attrition and supporting performance across the HR function. Streamlining processes and improving engagement with NGP’s people is integral to her role. Her flair has enabled her to support the move away from admin based functions to making HR more flexible and responsive to the operations needs and a staff force of 500.  She is instrumental in implementing and overseeing on-going recruitment strategies, retaining key players and managing their well-being. She has recently been awarded Forward Ladies – Yorkshire, North East & Scotland’s ‘Emerging Leader’ and has also been nominated for the Forward Ladies – National & Summit ‘Emerging Leader’.

David Bootle

Head of Corporate Marketing

David Bootle is the Global Head of Corporate Marketing and with roughly 20 years’ experience. Formerly both a regional and national journalist, he now leads corporate marketing with extensive experience of international marketing and an equally extensive network of media, broadcast and advertising contacts. By developing a content strategy he has helped to position the company as an innovator and thought-leader in the international utilities sector.  He builds lasting relationships which provide positive brand profile with trade and international media, Chambers of Commerce and the CBI to name a couple. 

Sam Cooper

Health and Wellbeing Lead

Before joining as Health and Wellbeing Lead, Sam worked in high-performance sport with professional athletes for over a decade. In that time, he has managed multidisciplinary teams in a range of disciplines geared towards finding opportunities to improve in some of the most competitive environments in the world – most recently working with Newcastle United.

In recent years, Sam has worked in private, public and voluntary sectors consulting on evidence-based health and wellbeing interventions designed to improve wellbeing and increase performance. This involved working with some of the biggest businesses in the region, including FTSE 100 companies.

Alongside this, Sam worked closely with the NHS, Public Health England and clinical commissioning groups to develop health outcomes of the wider population. This covered a range of interventions including key research, development of projects, commissioning new initiatives and direct delivery of NHS health checks across the region, including blood testing.

In his new role, he is responsible for designing and implementing a full health and wellbeing provision geared to give colleagues access to the best support possible, increasing wellbeing and performance to maximise potential. Alongside this, Sam brings his expertise from Health and Wellbeing into other areas of the business, lending his perspective from a strategic and leadership viewpoint.

Jonathan Spiteri

Head of Infrastructure

Jonathan Spiteri is Head of Infrastructure for Global Procurement Group and Northern Gas and Power. Based in Malta, with a Masters Degree in Information Technology from the University of Malta, he also possesses multiple hands-on certifications on cloud, virtualisation, Windows and Linux. Jonathan’s key areas of competency include wide-ranging IT operations, development, problem-solving, large-scale IT-design and implementation focusing on innovation, automation, efficiency, team growth and mentoring.

His vast experience includes 20 years of IT experience in multiple industries including government agencies, telecommunication, web application security, online casino gaming, online video streaming and banking.

Ralph Attard

Head of Architecture

Ralph Attard is based in Malta and is Head of Architecture across the group. He holds a Masters Degree in Software Engineering, an MBA in IT Management, and various industry certifications. As an educator and public speaker, Ralph covers server infrastructure, software development, data platforms, enterprise architecture, management, and IT operations. His 17 years of hands-on and leading positions on building fully-integrated and high-performance systems takes our platforms to the next level.

He has been with Northern Gas and Power and ClearVUE Systems for two years, driving the software development for the roll out of the proprietary systems.

Umesh Deenadayalan

Executive Director, NGP Websmart

Umesh Deenadayalan is Executive Director at NGP Websmart. Umesh leads the business’ process of technology adoption to fulfil Global Procurement Group’s digital agenda. He has a Masters Degree in e-Technology for Business from the University of Sunderland (UK), and specialises in transforming business requirements into robust solution architectures. He has over 10 years’ experience leading high-potential matrix teams across software design and embedded systems development.

Operating out of Chennai, India, NGP Websmart is a facility dedicated as the technology nerve-centre, supporting Global Procurement Group’s operations and growth strategies as well as the back end functionality and operability of the energy management solutions. Umesh focuses on developing and deploying innovative technology solutions that drive operational efficiencies, responsiveness and rapid scale growth. Combining both offshore and onsite capabilities, his team works closely with Global Procurement Group’s senior leadership in architecting advanced decision support systems that power global aspirations.

David Summerhayes is Director of Legal Services for Northern Gas and Power. He has extensive knowledge in commercial law, having represented multinational corporations, FTSE 100 companies, and fast-growing SMEs, occupying senior positions at global and national law firms, including Partner with Sintons LLP.

Kevin Anderson

Head of Legal

Kevin Anderson has been a commercial and dispute resolution solicitor for circa 20 years and has a wealth of experience at helping to ensure that our business runs smoothly. He ensures our commercial contracts are fair and reasonable for all concerned. His experience is deep and this enables him to manage queries professionally and effectively to ensure they are resolved before the prospect of a dispute arises. He manages a small team of legal experts and oversees the implementation of training and development, ensuring his team and the wider global businesses are fully up to date with all of the legislation and laws that apply to our sector.

Raveesh Krishnan is an Executive Director at NGP Websmart. He has a Masters in Information Technology for Business from the University of Sunderland (UK). He specialises in high-level research and development on Big Data Architecture and IoT workflows.

Amy Jukes joined Northern Gas and Power in March 2015 as the Administration Manager. With over 10 years’ experience in the energy industry, Amy has successfully developed our Admin Department into one of the best in the industry.

After four years successfully managing and developing our Administration Department, Amy was selected to head up and develop the new Point of Sale Team, which gives our Account Managers direct access to her and her teams’ vast knowledge of the energy industry. This role plays a vital link between the sales consultants and the services team, ensuring robustness of sales and that our rigorous compliance standards are constantly met.
